We tried two different processes - one where students used gummed tape, like in the photo to the left and others went straight to newsprint and art paste. I like how the tape dries really hard, but not how it warps and bubbles. Cool idea, not that easy to use. We will be applying a layer of white acrylic as a primer and students will make their own design to complete the look. Watch for the final product in a week or so.....
The grade 8's have been learning about typography and fonts. This assignment was a great way to get them thinking about designing their own letter. I got the idea from blick art - they called them 3D Architectural Letters. We basically used old matboard pieces and small disposable cups in between two layers of the same shape.

To begin our first hands on assignment making typography, gr. 7 students were given a selection of these awesome letters made by Markus at www.digitprop.com. They used the templates to build the 3d form. This was not always an easy task - patience and tiny hands are very helpful. The results were great and watching all the problem solving to make the papers come together was fun. After, Students were given a blank 3D template to decorate made by using a letter from a font called Punched Out by Tobias Sommer. So cool. You can download the font here ...http://www.dafont.com/punched-out.font How else can I get these kids to use technology for making great things other than tell them to bring their phones and ipads to class?
Each student used a variety of apps (free and paid for, their choice) or they could use the online versions of some to create an interesting self portrait, or selfies as they call them. Some of the favourite apps : pilxr.com, snapseed, befunky.com, percolator, wordfoto and usketch. I had them create a thumbnail page to show some of their designs. Here is my example. Grade 7's talked about the master Picasso and his work during the cubist movement. We looked at different artists and artworks before beginning a composition of their own using a musical instrument as the focal point. Creating the contour lines first and then dividing all spaces into smaller fragments, students then practiced with a two colour blending technique in coloured pencil. Grade 8s spent a lot of time compiling ideas about the qualities and symbols that make them who they are. We began first by brainstorming and then started working with simple images to associate. Students learned about the sacred art of mandala among several Asian cultures, but mainly Tibetan. See all of the amazing designs at our Artsonia Gallery > button to the right! Grade 7's created beautiful fall compositions using oil pastels. For many students this was their first time using the material to blend and create the amazing contrast of highlights and shadows. These drawings came out so beautifully, I was really proud and so were the students. Check the rest out on Artsonia! The Grade 8's created dynamic compositions after talking about the Spanish tradition of Dia de los Muertos. Not usually celebrated in Canada - but we have several students from Mexico with us and they let us in first hand of how they celebrate. Using oil pastels, students combined different aspects of what we had discussed in interesting and colourful ways. Check out all of the students pieces on Artsonia!
